Latest NewsAugust 2007 ‘Here we go round the mulberry bush’ A ‘home’ is critical to ensuring the most chaotic and vulnerable people in our communities are able to stabilise and develop an improved quality of life. Their stabilisation improves life for everyone. Without it they are consigned to a perpetual cycle of streets, prisons and temporary fixes, ensuring settlement and growth are rarely maintained. This presents services with a challenge. How do they increase their game to reach out and provide the appropriate service to those who need it? How do they recognise the risk of loosing someone to this fate and intervene successfully to prevent it happening in the first place? The answer itself is complex but includes more integrated responses and raising the skill set of those working on the front line. It also lies in statutory services valuing the voluntary and community sector that often provide a level of insight into the factors of distress enabling trust to be built where none existed before. The Government’s publication, Reaching Out: An Action Plan on Social Exclusion (September 2006) heralded the development of 12 pilot sites across England and earlier this year the selected pilot sites were announced. These pilots are aimed at adults and their families and provide us with the possibility of learning new lessons in achieving improved outcomes for communities and the families and individuals that make them.
